JUST FOR KICKS

The film was birthed out of a simple idea: the beauty and poetry of two kids throwing their shoes on a electrical cable at dusk. That image stuck in the mind of Emmanuil Morari, that it was the little things in life that made it beautiful. After discussing the concept with Director Damien Blue and a few back and forth inspirations, the script developed quickly. The story focused on exploring how we cope with grief and loss.

In addition, they wanted to showcase how friendship can have a transformative effect on our lives, in moments when we need them most. That there is beauty in that. Damien likes coming of age underground stories, with flawed characters, that’s why they decided to keep the kids young, who try to process this complicated, hard to talk about thing - grief. So they had them talk through this action of throwing shoes on a wire. The characters communicated through a poetic gesture.

Damien wanted to film the short in a style distinct style, utilizing close ups with wide angle lenses, a muted color palette, all framed in a 4:3 aspect ratio. It allowed the story to remain intimate and authentic, feeling the emotions of the characters. With a run and gun crew, the team captured the principle photography in a few days - where the team stayed in the same house, bonding to the characters and story in between the takes.
